First Police University in Nigeria

The Police University in Kaduna will commence academic activities in September this year, the acting Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mr Mohammed Abubakar, has said. Abubakar, who disclosed this in Abeokuta on Friday, while addressing officers and men of Ogun Police Command, said the university had been approved by the Federal Executive Council. The IGP was in Abeokuta to inaugurate 13 Armoured Personnel Carriers (APC) and 156 Patrol Vehicles donated to the police by the State Government. He said: ``the President is very committed for the take-off of the university; the senate building is ready and the university already has a deputy Vice-Chancellor coordinating its affairs. ’’ He said that officers and men of the police force would benefit from his administration transformation agenda. Abubakar assured that issues of accommodation, police uniform, welfare, cooperatives, command hospitals, training and re-training would be given priority by his administration. He commended Gov. Ibiknule Amsoun for donating the APC’s and the vehicles to the police and urged the command to make good use of them to reduce the rate of crime in the state. ``The task of effective policing is now up to you as the government has helped the force by providing you with what you need to perform. ``The present police administration is determined to build a force that will respect the dignity of everyone and be civil in its approach and operations. `` Abubakar said his administration would introduce a code of conduct that would guide the operations, actions and inactions of men of the police irrespective of their rank. He appealed to officers and men of the police force to have the fear of God in all that they do, stressing: ``you will be accountable for all your actions and in actions one day. ’’ Earlier, Mr Ikemefuna Okoye, the state Police Commissioner, said the Ogun experienced `drastic reduction’ in the rate of crime during the last four months. He attributed the reduction to the continuous raid of suspected hide-outs and flash points’ within and outside the state capital.
